Ninja Stealth GR scribing strikes again: #iafasia15

I attended the 18th International Association of Facilitators Asia Conference, Mumbai, India,  #iafasia15 with the specific intent to photobomb the event with uninvited Graphic Recording. I succeeded. Total cost about 1200 USD.

At Changi airport I bought myself a  Moleskin A5 unlined notebook to record my congress sketch notes.

 

40,000 feet in the air I decided to start sketchnoting.

Minutes before they presented I asked Yoo and Lee if I may do a GR of their session.

Without paper roll, I used a pair of flipcharts : it works!

My chart

Many participants were amazed that a session could be captured by graphic recording aka large scale live hand drawn concept mapping

This was the cream of the cake as far as I was concerned. At open space (OST) the 180 participants were invited to host topics: about 40 people stepped forwards.

 Ms Deepa sitting next to me was bugging me to host a session on "Graphic Recording".

 "What is it about it that you want to know?" I asked. 

"Using drawing in facilitation" she said.

"You host the session" I countered, "And I will attend".

Deepa did, and I attended. and so did more than 20 other participants.

The first chart captures the essence of our conversation. 

The second chart is some participants tentative steps into the world of visuals in facilitation.

In summary: Objective achieved!!

I manage to showcase the benefits of visuals, impromptu sketchnotes, posters, graphic recordings : capturing scenic  spots, intimate 1-1 conversations, group activities, plenary sessions, workshops, group discussions. I piqued interest and demo-ed in the world of image thinking and the multiple-use tool of graphics in facilitation.

Hand draw and write to increase communication.

Infants think in images before they learn word. Many of us continued to think in images. Cavemen drew pictures in cave walls. Ancient Egyptian wrote with hieroglyphics (pictures). Chinese writing began as pictures. Using pictures helps us to communicate. 

Participants were asked to choose a picture card, then use it to help describe themselves.  As they did  I made a quick graphic recording.

Trip reports can be made using a poster of graphics and text.

The local team liked the chart so much they taped it to the wall 

We did an icon jam: each person took turns to call out an item to draw.

Hard Trying (putting all my effort into doing this. Easy to remember. Saves time.  Creativity. Simple. Easy to understand. Builds an environment of trust. Summary. Everyone can draw. Creates an emotional attachment to the content. Easy to see the main point.

Entertaining. Learned a lot.

SGGR June 27 Meetup

Ticket sales were via eventbrite, with attractive early bird discount.

Electronic ticketing and booking helps with logistics and catering.

First item was a demo of my Z-fold  portable 3x6 foot graphic wall.

It was an interactive demo where participants were guided to unfold and assemble the 13 mm foam core board.

Then the open space

Participants were invited to create A5 size tickets with topics they wanted to discuss.

9 tickets were generated.

each creator outlined what the topic was about.

The 9 topics were clustered into four groups.

There was general consensus that the whole group was interested in all 4 clusters.

The four clusters were each allocated a time slot

1) TeKaTiNi

2) on logistics and portable boards

3) a cluster of visual recording tips

4) Icon jam

And a timekeeper was allocated
